Press Release
VIETNAMESE MIGRANT WORKERS & BRIDES OFFICE (VMWBO)
HSINCHU CATHOLIC DIOCESE, TAIWAN
PRESS RELEASE
WHAT: VMWBO, along with a coalition consisting of eight grassroots nonprofits based in Taiwan, will hold a press conference followed by a mock funeral for a recently deceased migrant worker, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Trong. The press conference aims to highlight the deadly effect of the Taiwan government’s lack of human rights protection for migrant workers. This has resulted in the high number of workers who has to take matters into their own hands by running away from abusive brokers and/or employers. Many of these runaways are victims of trafficking and slavery.
For many years, non-governmental organizations (NGO) have pushed for the right of migrant workers to freely choose employers. This will help eliminate abusive employers by allowing workers to vote with their own feet. We’re calling on the CLA to revamp their policy to incorporate this basic right to better protect migrant workers.
