A Call for Help
A Call for Help Nguyen Thi Lan* came to Taiwan June 2004 to work as a live-in caregiver. Her husband was diagnosed with a terminal illness so she had to leave him and her children behind to earn money for his treatment. Lan’s employer in Taiwan suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed. Her responsibility included waking up at 5am to tend to Mr. Chang’s* needs, as well as cooking, cleaning, and other duties. Lan’s workday usually ends at 8pm when she puts Mr. Chang to bed. On weekends, Lan usually helps out at Mrs. Chang’s restaurant during the day.
International Advocacy Campaign for Dao Thi Quynh
International Advocacy Campaign for Dao Thi Quynh Dao Thi Quynh came to Taiwan December of 2003 to work as a domestic helper at the age of 18. Her family borrowed from the bank and mortgaged their home to pay Tracimexco, a governmental employment agency, US$1000 for the process. Unbeknown to her, Quynh has unwittingly become another victim trafficked into Taiwan under the guise of “caretaker”.
